Anthony Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential' Receives Deluxe Folio Society Edition with New Paul Pope Artwork

The Folio Society is releasing a deluxe hardcover edition of Anthony Bourdain's seminal memoir, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. This special edition commemorates the influential work with unique artistic contributions and enhanced presentation.

Central to this new release is a commissioned portrait of Bourdain by legendary artist Paul Pope. Pope, a friend of Bourdain, created the illustration specifically for this edition, aiming to capture the chef's early days with an "expressionist/punk" style that evokes his connection to the Lower East Side and the music he loved.

The Folio Society's edition is designed by Kishan Rajani, incorporating Jake Chessum's photography on the cover and an adapted food list in Bourdain's handwriting on the slipcase. It also features 12 rare photographs by Chessum, gilded edges, and a cloth binding. The book's generous format allows for many of the integrated photographs to be presented as double-page spreads.

Editor Mandy Kirkby noted that Kitchen Confidential remains compelling due to its "authenticity, passion, and generosity of spirit." While acknowledging changes in kitchen culture since its original publication, Kirkby highlighted enduring insights from Bourdain, such as his views on brunch and shellfish. The book is described not as a cookbook but as a visceral exploration of the culinary world.

This deluxe edition of Kitchen Confidential is priced at £85 / US $130 and will be available for purchase on The Folio Society website starting October 13 at 8am PT.

Bourdain's legacy continues to be recognized in other media, including the Adult Swim animated series Get Jiro, based on his graphic novel series.
