Brazilian cartoonist Eduardo Medeiros is set to release "Battle in the Flower Gardens," a new graphic novel that delves into a coming-of-age narrative infused with video game nostalgia. Medeiros, who trained under Rafael Albuquerque, is known for his work on "Roderick and the City of Morhil" and "Funny Creek."
Published under Comixology Originals, the book is written, drawn, and colored by Medeiros, with lettering by Deyvison Manes. The story follows two adolescents, Luke and Mitchell, on the cusp of adulthood in a beachside town. Medeiros draws from personal experiences to craft a narrative about joy, sadness, and the enduring magic of summer.
The graphic novel is set to feature distinct art styles to reflect the characters' journey of self-discovery. Luke and his best friend Mitchell, who share an affinity for geek culture and video games, often find solace in arcades, a common refuge for teenagers in the 1990s. This particular summer, however, brings changes that test their friendship. The narrative culminates in a competition centered on video game skills, which carries significant real-world consequences for the boys.
Medeiros stated that "Battle in the Flower Gardens" is a story he has long wished to tell, inspired by his childhood summers spent in Capão Novo, a beachside town in southern Brazil. He described the creation process as a personal journey back to his youth and hopes the book will resonate with readers, prompting them to recall their own formative experiences.
"Battle in the Flower Gardens" is scheduled for release on the Comixology platform on August 25, 2026.
