In a 2020 interview, Nolan stated that making films is a complex and time-consuming process, but making video games is "even more complicated and takes even longer." He elaborated that the video game industry is "really tough" and that he wouldn't want to create a simple licensed game that merely leverages a film's brand. Instead, Nolan expressed a desire for any adaptation to "be something great in its own right."
While he has never been directly involved in the development of a video game adaptation of his films, Nolan's wife, Emma Thomas, and cinematographer Wally Pfister consulted on the visuals and gameplay for the tie-in game to Batman Begins. More concretely, Nolan had previously considered developing a video game set in the world of his 2010 film Inception. He envisioned Inception as a universe where "a lot of other stories could take place," and the project was officially greenlit at one point. However, no developer was ever announced, and the game was ultimately not released.
Despite these past considerations, Nolan has continued to direct acclaimed films such as Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. The visual and narrative complexity of these movies makes them prime candidates for potential video game adaptations.
