Ewan McGregor has voiced a strong desire to continue portraying Obi-Wan Kenobi, expressing that he would dedicate the remainder of his acting career to telling more stories about the legendary Jedi. Speaking with E! News, McGregor confirmed his readiness to return to the role, though he noted that Disney has not yet signaled plans for new adventures.
McGregor's current tenure as Obi-Wan began with his return in the Disney+ series of the same name, set between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. The series explored Obi-Wan's exile on Tatooine and his internal struggles after the fall of the Jedi Order. At the conclusion of the series, McGregor's Obi-Wan walks into the desert, having decided he cannot place undue pressure on a young Luke Skywalker and must leave him with his guardians, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. His path then leads him to a reunion with Qui-Gon Jinn, setting up the premise for future stories as he is later seen as Alec Guinness's portrayal in A New Hope.
"What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories," McGregor stated. He highlighted the potential for numerous narratives within the 10-year gap before Obi-Wan reaches the age of his older counterpart, suggesting that "series or movies" could fill this time.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series itself was met with positive critical reception and strong viewership on Disney+. Despite some criticisms regarding plot points like Princess Leia's age and Darth Vader's direct confrontation with Obi-Wan before their encounter in A New Hope, the return of McGregor and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader was largely celebrated by fans. However, recent shifts in Disney's strategy concerning its live-action Star Wars content may cast doubt on the possibility of a second season.
The prospect of a new Obi-Wan film also looms, potentially influenced by the performance of upcoming Star Wars projects. The success of future cinematic releases, such as "The Mandalorian and Grogu," could impact decisions regarding further investments in the Star Wars film franchise. McGregor's enthusiasm for the role remains evident, but the greenlighting of new Obi-Wan content appears to be contingent on Disney's future plans for the galaxy far, far away. The initial concept for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was reportedly a trilogy of films before the focus shifted to Disney+; whether that cinematic idea could be revived remains uncertain, with no immediate projects apparent.
