Fantagraphics has announced the launch of Takumigraphics, a new imprint dedicated to a curated selection of East Asian comics and graphic novels. The inaugural release under this banner is "Lovers of the Empire," a hardcover volume by artist Yudori. The story is a romance set against the backdrop of Japanese-occupied Korea in the 1920s.
"Lovers of the Empire" follows the intertwined lives of Arisa Jo, the daughter of a wealthy merchant and a proponent of modern values, and Jun Seomoon, a young man from the countryside with traditional roots. Tasked with escorting Arisa to the capital city of Gyeongsung, their contrasting personalities lead to friction and an unexpected connection. The narrative explores their developing relationship amidst a rapidly changing society influenced by both Westernization and Japanese occupation.
Yudori, also known for the Eisner-nominated "Raging Clouds," described the work as a "cute boy-meets-girl romance, set against a silent backdrop of massacres and battles." The artist further commented on the work's thematic depth, stating that it reflects the Korean experience of maintaining a outward appearance of normalcy while internal turmoil simmers.
Fantagraphics Associate Publisher Eric Reynolds stated that Takumigraphics aligns with the company's ongoing mission to showcase diverse forms of cartooning. He emphasized that the imprint acknowledges the significant role of Manga, Manhwa, Manhua, and other East Asian comics in shaping the future of visual storytelling. The new line aims to highlight works from Japan, South Korea, China, and other regions.
"Lovers of the Empire Vol. 1" is now available in bookstores and can be ordered through platforms like Amazon.
