Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the inclusion of subtle, background relationships, such as that of a lesbian couple, was a deliberate choice to make the game's world feel more authentic and lived-in. In an interview with TheGamer, Hamaguchi elaborated that the development team's priority was to portray a diverse group of people inhabiting the world in a genuine manner.

"Rebirth is a game where you encounter many towns, cultures, and relationships throughout your journey," Hamaguchi explained. "In my view, the presence of diverse, authentic relationships within that journey also enhances the world’s realism." He emphasized that the goal was not to include same-sex couples merely for the sake of representation, but to tell the stories of the world's inhabitants with sincerity and care. The team was reportedly pleased by players noticing these subtle interactions.

Hamaguchi also touched upon the evolution of LGBTQ+ representation in Japanese games, noting that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's global journey and its varied populace contribute to an atmosphere where such individuals simply exist. He believes that players pay close attention to the nuances of these depictions, including conversational tones and emotional distance between characters, which further grounds the world.

The Final Fantasy series has a history with a queer following, partly attributed to its complex characters and certain memorable in-game moments. Hamaguchi's comments highlight a continued effort to represent the world as it is, aiming for greater authenticity in character portrayals.
