Based on Chugong’s web novel and later adapted into a popular webtoon, "Solo Leveling" presents a world where hunters combat monstrous beasts using supernatural abilities to prevent humanity's extinction. Central to the story is Sung Jin-woo, who navigates a hunter ranking system and gains access to "The System," a video-game-like interface that allows him to rapidly increase his power. Jin-woo begins as a weak E-Rank hunter but evolves into an overwhelmingly powerful force through a steady and earned progression.

The series' immense popularity stems from its escalating power fantasy, which prioritizes spectacle. While this focus often overshadows narrative depth, the presence of a relatable protagonist and likable supporting characters helps ground the story. However, sustaining an overpowered protagonist's journey can lead to neglected or prematurely extinguished secondary characters.

Esil Radiru: A Demon Noble's Potential

Esil Radiru, an elder princess of the Radiru Clan, is introduced as a demon noble. She encounters Jin-woo on the 80th floor of the Demon Castle after her knights attempt to eliminate him. Begging for mercy and offering her aid, Esil plays a crucial role in the fight against the Demon King Baran. Her introduction highlights her bravery and willingness to adapt when outmatched, adding a lighter tone to the tense narrative. Although her arc is shortened in the original material, Esil returns in "Solo Leveling: Ragnarok," the spin-off sequel focusing on Jin-woo's son, Sung Suho. In this new role, she aids Suho as the Monarch of Gluttony, even providing him with the Demon King's Purified Blood necessary to craft the Holy Water of Life. While her expanded role in the sequel offers some redemption, her characterization in the original story could have been further developed alongside Jin-woo's progression.

Christopher Reed: A Shortened Legendary Hunter's Arc

Christopher Reed, one of America's two strongest hunters and a National Level Hunter, never reaches his full narrative potential. His story begins with a premonition of his death, prompting him to seek Jin-woo's assistance. Reed demonstrates his formidable abilities during the International Guild Conference Arc, where he is ambushed by three Monarchs within a dimensional gap. Despite a valiant effort, he perishes, with his body discovered in the ruins of his mansion. This death feels abrupt, leaving his powerful fire magic and legendary hunter status largely unexplored. "Ragnarok" revisits Reed in a revised timeline, but he is again quickly targeted and killed by the Itarim, a divine race. This recurring fate leaves him as a hunter doomed to a violent end, underscoring a missed opportunity for greater character depth.

Lee Joohee: A Healer's Retreat

Lee Joohee, a B-Rank Healer and former close friend of Jin-woo from his E-Rank days, experiences a heartbreaking fate. During the D-Rank Dungeon Arc, she was protective of Jin-woo, healing his injuries. However, the traumatic events of the Cartenon Temple, also known as the Double Dungeon, inflicted deep psychological scars and a paralyzing fear of dungeons, forcing her to retire early. While her choice to pursue a peaceful life contrasts with Jin-woo's escalating quest for power, her early departure feels like a narrative contrivance to shift focus to grander battles. Her compassionate role as an anchor for Jin-woo during his early days, and the subsequent drifting apart due to incompatible circumstances, leaves a lingering sense of what could have been.

Sung Il-Hwan: A Father's Tragic Reunion

Jin-woo's father, Sung Il-Hwan, a figure who transitioned from firefighting to become one of Korea's first S-Rank Hunters, faced a prolonged absence. Trapped in a dungeon for over a decade, he was presumed dead by his family. After being rescued by the Rulers, an ancient angelic race, he was compelled to serve as their vessel in a mission to defeat the nascent Shadow Monarch. This decade-long separation, devastating to his family, was compounded by his return coinciding with his death. Il-Hwan was denied the opportunity to live as a family man and offer Jin-woo emotional closure, disintegrating before he could explain his absence or mission. This final, brief reunion, marked by a thankless sacrifice, suggests a missed opportunity for a more meaningful father-son moment.

Goto Ryuji: A Ruthless Foil's Abrupt End

Goto Ryuji, the strongest hunter in Japan and Guild Master of the Draw Sword Guild, exemplifies another powerful character whose narrative utility was cut short. While not as sympathetic due to his ruthlessness and disregard for human life, Goto served as an interesting foil to Jin-woo, displaying sharp political ambition and a survival-of-the-fittest mentality. During the Jeju Island Raids, Goto becomes separated from his guild and discovers their deceased members. Unmoved, having covertly intended to eliminate Korean S-Rank Hunters himself, he is ambushed and beheaded by the Ant King. This abrupt death, while fitting for his hubris, feels like a disservice to his potential as an antagonist whose power had been consistently hyped. His demise ultimately serves to elevate Jin-woo as the singular chosen one capable of confronting the Ant King.
