King of the Hill showrunner Saladin Patterson has addressed three of the most enduring questions among the show's fanbase: why Hank Hill harbors such a strong dislike for charcoal, whether Dale Gribble suspects the truth about his son Joseph's parentage, and the current status of Luanne Platter.

Hank's Propane Zealotry

Patterson explained that Hank's staunch loyalty to propane, and by extension his antipathy towards charcoal, stems from his career. Before becoming a propane and propane accessories salesman under Buck Strickland, Hank worked in sales for a company like Dress Barn. It was only upon discovering propane's benefits that he became a passionate advocate. "I think Hank is a true convert, and just like any other true convert, he became a zealot," Patterson stated. "So he really does believe in the superiority of propane."

Dale's Cognitive Dissonance

The long-running suspicion that Dale Gribble is unaware of his wife Nancy's affair with John Redcorn, and that Joseph is not his biological son, is a complex issue that the show has navigated through Dale's unique worldview. Patterson confirmed that this dynamic persists, referencing a past episode where Dale's conspiracy theorist mindset allowed him to rationalize the evidence by suggesting aliens had tampered with his DNA. "The way Greg Daniels explained it in the original episode, which I think still applies now, is that Dale's characteristic of being a conspiracy theorist means he's going to look at evidence and create a reality that is bonkers to most people," Patterson elaborated. "For conspiracy theorists, it's their way of navigating little bits of truth here and there. Dale sees the evidence we all see—he saw John Redcorn climbing out of his window—but his conspiracy theory mind is able to create a reality that makes sense based on the truth that he believes."

The Mystery of Luanne and Lucky

Luanne Platter, voiced by the late Brittany Murphy, and her husband Lucky, voiced by the late Tom Petty, were notably absent from the initial return of King of the Hill, with only a photo in the Hill house hinting at their existence. Patterson acknowledged the sensitivity surrounding the characters' absence, especially given the passing of both actors. While a brief flashback in season 15 revealed that Bobby lived with Luanne during his final year of high school, her current whereabouts remain unaddressed. Patterson shared that the show's creative team, including himself, Greg Daniels, and Mike Judge, are still deliberating on how to handle Luanne and Lucky's story. "We have not landed on that yet in terms of what happened to them," he admitted. "Right now, it still feels right not to close a door, but also not to lock ourselves in too much." The showrunner emphasized that any decision regarding their storyline, particularly concerning recasting, would be approached with utmost respect and creativity, only proceeding if it felt truly worthwhile.

King of the Hill season 15 is currently available for streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus.
