Curry Barker, director of the horror film Obsession, has expressed interest in helming a more mature, R-rated Indiana Jones movie. Barker shared his vision during an interview with Gold Derby, where he discussed the possibility of a grittier adventure film.
Barker stated that he and longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson have often talked about making a "really f**ked up, rated-R version" of Indiana Jones. He feels that audiences have primarily seen a family-friendly iteration of the character and that exploring a darker, more intense journey for Indy could be compelling. "Literally pushing the boundaries of that genre would be fun for me," Barker commented.
Tomlinson echoed this sentiment, expressing a desire to revive the style of action-adventure films popular in the '80s and '90s. He emphasized the importance of grounding characters and stories in reality, even within fantastical action sequences, citing the approach in Obsession as an example of creating something "honest and grounded in reality."
In related news, Michael Johnston, who starred in Obsession, has been cast in the upcoming Mummy movie, The Mummy: Book of the Dead. Johnston described the experience of filming a large-budget production as vastly different from indie filmmaking, noting the more structured, multi-angle approach and the significant amount of waiting involved.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead is slated for release on October 15, 2027. Barker's next project, a horror-comedy titled Anything But Ghosts, is scheduled for a May 2027 release.
