The 23rd and final novel in Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, titled Orphans of Mossflower, is slated for publication in September 2027, marking the end of the beloved saga after 41 years. The book will be released posthumously, alongside the series’ first-ever box set.
The forthcoming novel was revealed through the digital publishing catalog platform Edelweiss, which lists it as the "final book in the series." While specific details about Orphans of Mossflower remain scarce, it is anticipated to serve as a direct sequel to the series’ most recent installment, The Rogue Crew, published in 2011.
Brian Jacques passed away in 2011 at the age of 71. The Rogue Crew was the only Redwall book published after his death, making Orphans of Mossflower the second. It is currently unclear how much of the novel was completed by Jacques himself or if editors made any additions prior to its release.
Fans have speculated about the content of the final novel, with one prominent theory centering on a character created by a contest winner in 2010. This character, a haremaiden named Reisa Kartwell, was designed by a fan named Olivia. Reisa's name, derived from German words for "travel" and "map," hints at her role as Salamandastron's cartographer. Her maps were intended to be crucial for Redwallers needing to quickly reach Salamandastron during an attack on Redwall Abbey. This character was initially expected to appear in The Rogue Crew, but this did not materialize, leading fans to believe she will feature in Orphans of Mossflower.
The Rogue Crew itself followed Abbot Thibb, the Longpatrol hares, and a crew of sea otters as they defended Redwall Abbey from the villainous Razzid Wearat and his amphibious wheeled ship. The narrative direction for the final book will likely pick up from these events.
This announcement follows the earlier cancellation of Netflix’s Redwall animated series. In other animal-fantasy literature news, Erin Hunter’s Warriors series is set to receive an animated series on Disney+ and a video game scheduled for release in October 2026.
