A new fan theory for Spider-Man: No Way Home offers a potentially magical explanation for the film's poignant ending. The theory posits that Ned Leeds's developing magical aptitudes might have influenced his subconscious recollection of Peter Parker.
During the climax of the film, Peter Parker makes the ultimate sacrifice, convincing Doctor Strange to cast a spell that makes everyone in the world forget his existence. This leaves Peter utterly alone, estranged from his friends and loved ones, who have no memory of him. The film concludes with Peter reintroducing himself to MJ and Ned, both of whom have moved on, seemingly without any recollection of their shared past.
While MJ is shown holding a necklace Peter gave her and appearing to grapple with a sense of loss, the final scene with Ned has sparked considerable debate. Peter and Ned share their signature handshake at a bodega. Ned seems to subconsciously react, exclaiming "Peter!" before the film cuts to black. Many viewers interpret this as a sign that the spell has been broken for Ned, while others suggest it could be mere muscle memory or a fleeting flicker of recognition.
However, one TikTok user, @yayaahlyzee, has proposed that Ned's emerging magical abilities might be the key. The theory highlights that Ned had begun demonstrating an ability to use Doctor Strange's sling ring earlier in the film, even using it to conjure portals. The suggestion is that the handshake, now imbued with latent magic from Ned, could have been enough to pierce the spell, allowing for a subconscious acknowledgment of Peter.
Jacob Batalon, who portrays Ned, addressed the film's ending in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, deliberately leaving the interpretation open. He questioned whether Ned truly remembers Peter or if it's simply muscle memory, suggesting that Ned might only repeat Peter's name because Peter stated it in that moment. Batalon characterized the scene as "really up to interpretation" but acknowledged it as a "really cool little nod."
Despite the ambiguity, Batalon did hint at the possibility of "a slight glint or little glimmer" of recognition, leaving fans to ponder the true nature of Ned's memory.
Marvel Studios has confirmed plans for future Spider-Man adventures with Tom Holland, and producer Kevin Feige has indicated a long-term vision that includes the eventual introduction of Miles Morales into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the significant box office success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it is expected that Sony and Marvel will move forward with new installments, though no official release slate has been announced.
