Lucasfilm and Disney are producing a Welsh language dub of Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd. This initiative is in anticipation of the film's 50th anniversary next year and is being undertaken with S4C and the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.
The Welsh dub is scheduled to premiere on S4C and its associated platforms on December 25, 2026. The project aims to celebrate and preserve the Welsh language. "The chance to celebrate the Welsh language through Star Wars is one we couldn’t pass up," stated Michael Kohn, Lucasfilm Director of Distribution Operations, in a press release. He also noted the success of previous Indigenous dubs of Star Wars in revitalizing interest in those languages.
The voice cast for Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd includes Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker, Matthew Rhys as Han Solo, and Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Aimee-Ffion Edwards will voice Princess Leia, Mark Lewis Jones will portray Darth Vader, and Llyr Ifans will be C-3PO. Other cast members include Nia Roberts as Aunt Beru, Richard Harrington as Grand Moff Tarkin, Owain Arthur as Red Leader, and Rhodri Meilir as Gold Leader.
Ellyn Stern is directing the Welsh dub, with Michael Kohn serving as producer. This endeavor aligns with broader efforts to support and promote linguistic diversity through popular media.
