Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to introduce a significant new character in its upcoming season: Marnûkh, an orc conceived for the show who deviates from J.R.R. Tolkien's original depictions. Unlike the monolithic portrayal of orcs as purely destructive beings in Tolkien's works, Marnûkh, played by Adam Young, will align with Galadriel in the fight against Sauron during the Second Age of Middle-earth.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay explained in an interview with Empire magazine that the character was born from an exploration of orcs' existence prior to Sauron's influence. Payne described Marnûkh as an "orc with an arc" who risks defection to the Elves, motivated by a shared enemy. While not presented as inherently good, Marnûkh is characterized as "morally challenged" but possessing free will. He will also deliver a short rhyming verse, a detail intended to develop his character and add depth to his presence amidst the epic narrative.
McKay highlighted the showrunners' desire to explore smaller, more personal aspects of orc life, such as their preferences and daily experiences, to create a more engaging character, while also questioning the trustworthiness of such an alliance. Payne further elaborated that Marnûkh might appear "sweet and funny" with a sensitive, even "poetic and soulful" side, but this is juxtaposed with potentially "gross and frightening" elements, keeping viewers uncertain of his true motives.
Marnûkh is the latest in a series of departures from Tolkien's canon in The Rings of Power. Season 3 will also feature a speaking Balrog battling Sauron and an early iteration of the Ringwraiths known as the Nazgnagôl. However, the Harfoots will be taking a less prominent role in the new season.
The upcoming season will reportedly focus on Sauron's efforts to forge the One Ring, the introduction of Galadriel's husband, Celeborn, and Gandalf's evolution into his iconic wizard persona. The official synopsis states that Middle-earth is at war five years after the fall of Eregion, with Sauron's armies advancing. Resistance remains in Khazad-dûm and the Elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, protected by their Three Rings. Sauron, in his tower of Barad-dûr, is driven to forge a One Ring to dominate all life, necessitating a unified effort from Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards to prevent his victory.
The first four episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 are slated to premiere on November 11, 2026. Episodes five and six will follow on November 18, with the season finale concluding on November 25. The first image from the new season depicts Marnûkh in a dramatic scene, hinting at his pivotal role.
