For enthusiasts of space-themed LEGO sets, a notable discount is currently available on the LEGO Technic Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit 42179 set. Amazon has reduced the price to $51.95, representing a 30% saving from its original price. This deal brings the cost to just under 10 cents per brick, a price point described as the lowest ever observed for this particular set.
The Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit 42179 set includes 526 pieces and is recommended for builders aged 10 and older. The construction is noted as relatively straightforward, capable of being completed within a few hours. Once assembled, the set features an interactive crank mechanism that simulates four simultaneous movements: the rotation of the Earth on its axis, the rotation of the sun on its axis, the orbit of the moon around the Earth, and the orbit of the Earth around the sun.
Beyond its visual appeal, the set serves as an educational tool. It demonstrates the mechanics of a crankshaft and illustrates the scientific relationship between the positions of the Earth, moon, and sun, correlating to different months, seasons, and moon phases. These interactive and educational qualities are highlighted as contributing to its value compared to LEGO sets that offer a less engaging post-build experience.
