LEGO is set to retire a significant number of its adult-oriented building sets, including two of its popular transforming Transformers models, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. Both of these sets are currently available at a discount as part of Amazon's Prime Day event, but will be discontinued at the end of July.
While LEGO has released three Transformers sets to date, both of the Autobot offerings are slated for retirement. The Optimus Prime set, released in June 2022, features over 1,500 pieces and can transform into the character's truck mode. IGN's review of the set praised its vehicle mode, noting its seemingly impossible construction.
The Bumblebee set, which arrived in July 2024, is a smaller and less expensive build compared to Optimus Prime. Although it was also well-received, reviewers noted that its transformation mechanics were not as robust as those found in the Optimus Prime set.
In contrast, the Decepticon Soundwave set, released last year, is not retiring and remains available at its standard price. This set has been lauded for its detailed design and clever transforming capabilities, with one reviewer calling it a standout among LEGO kits and a fulfillment of "1980s dreams."
