Amazon is currently offering a significant discount on the PlayStation Portal, reducing the price of a "Used: Very Good" unit to $146.99. This offer comes via a 30% off coupon automatically applied at checkout through Amazon Resale, the company's official outlet for pre-owned items. The deal arrives as a notable price drop, especially considering Sony recently increased the Portal's retail price from $200 to $250.
Grand Theft Auto 6 and Handheld Play
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19th, initially launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles. For those seeking to play the highly anticipated title on a mobile device, the PlayStation Portal presents a primary option. The device allows users to stream games from their PS5 console at up to 60fps, effectively turning the console into a handheld experience. It features an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen and replicates the functionality of a DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. While the Portal can stream games outside the home, a stable and fast internet connection is crucial for optimal performance.
PlayStation Portal Functionality
The PlayStation Portal is not a standalone gaming device; it requires a connection to a PS5 console. However, Sony has introduced a feature allowing users to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service, negating the need for a PS5. This cloud streaming option provides access to a library of over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, provided the user subscribes to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus. This development broadens the utility of the Portal beyond remote play from a local console.
While other methods exist to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi, such as using the PS Remote Play app on mobile devices or other handhelds like the Steam Deck, the PlayStation Portal offers a more integrated experience and retains access to DualSense features. The current discount on the PlayStation Portal makes it a more accessible option for players looking to experience Grand Theft Auto 6 and other PlayStation titles away from their main console.
