The Ugreen DXP4800 Plus NAS, a four-bay network-attached storage device, is currently available for $584 on Amazon as part of its Prime Day sales. This price represents a $146 reduction from its typical cost, bringing it to a level not seen frequently throughout the year.
This NAS model supports the installation of four hard drives, which are sold separately. While deals on drives are not currently highlighted, a 4 TB Seagate IronWolf NAS drive is priced around $190. To ensure data redundancy, users can configure the device with two drives. It is recommended to use CMR drives specifically designed for NAS use, as some SMR drives may be marketed for this purpose but are less suitable.
The DXP4800 Plus comes equipped with 8 GB of DDR5 RAM. While this is adequate for most users, it can be upgraded via a second SO-DIMM slot. The author notes that despite personal upgrades, RAM usage rarely exceeds 8 GB even with multiple applications running.
Under the hood, the Plus model features a five-core Intel Pentium Gold processor. This is generally sufficient for running various applications within Ugreen's UGOS Pro operating system, such as media streaming or photo management. However, for users heavily reliant on Docker for running numerous applications, a more powerful model like the Pro, which features an Intel Core i3 chip, might be more appropriate.
Docker allows users to run applications within isolated environments, facilitating the deployment of diverse software from sources like GitHub for tasks such as web scraping, media serving, or VPNs.
The author previously shared their positive experiences with a similar NAS, highlighting its utility in reducing reliance on cloud services like Google. For those interested in exploring the full capabilities of a NAS, a detailed account of this experience is available.
