Anne Hathaway's 'Mother Mary' Finds Streaming Success After Box Office Disappointment

Anne Hathaway's 2026 slate has been notable, featuring roles in projects like a Fashion sequel, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," and the erotic thriller "Verity." However, one of her more unconventional performances from the year is now experiencing a resurgence on streaming platforms after a quiet theatrical run.

"Mother Mary," directed by David Lowery, is currently climbing the HBO Max movie charts. According to FlixPatrol, the film has become one of the platform's top performers, indicating a growing audience is discovering the A24 release.

About 'Mother Mary'

The film centers on Mother Mary, a globally recognized singer on the cusp of a major comeback. Amidst an emotional crisis, she reconnects with Sam Anselm, her former best friend and costume designer, played by Michaela Coel. Their reunion becomes a confrontation with the complex history of their creative partnership. As their unresolved issues surface, the film takes a supernatural turn, introducing a ghostly presence that manifests as a mass of red fabric, transforming the intimate drama into something akin to an exorcism.

Lowery, known for his atmospheric filmmaking in "A Ghost Story" and "The Green Knight," directs Hathaway in this blend of psychological drama, supernatural horror, and commentary on artistic relationships. The supporting cast includes Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, and FKA twigs.

Despite its initial box office performance, "Mother Mary" has garnered a 69% score from critics and a 60% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting a divisive but ultimately well-regarded cinematic experiment.
