Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage have been confirmed as the two leads for the upcoming fifth season of HBO's crime anthology series, True Detective. The official casting announcement was made via a video posted on the show's official social media channels.
Issa López, who helmed the fourth season, "Night Country," is returning to serve as showrunner for Season 5. While specific plot details are still scarce, the next installment is reportedly set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Banderas is slated to portray Rai García, and Cage will play Henry Logan. The Hollywood Reporter was among the outlets detailing these early plot points and character roles.
Rumors surrounding Cage's involvement in True Detective Season 5 had been circulating since August of the previous year. Cage himself recently teased his potential participation at New York Comic Con, telling the audience that he "think[s] I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective." Banderas' casting was less consistently rumored but is now officially confirmed alongside Cage's.
Cage is known for his roles in films such as Raising Arizona, Face/Off, and National Treasure, with more recent appearances in projects like Spider-Noir and Pig. Banderas boasts a career that includes roles in The Mask of Zorro and the Shrek franchise, and has recently appeared in Tony and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Previous seasons of True Detective have featured notable pairings, including Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season and Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in its most recent.
Production for True Detective Season 5 is expected to commence in 2027, though a precise release date for the new episodes has not yet been announced.
