HBO is developing a television series based on the acclaimed role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3. Craig Mazin, co-creator of HBO's The Last of Us and the writer behind Chernobyl, is attached to the project as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The series, simply titled Baldur's Gate, will pick up where the events of Baldur's Gate 3 concluded. While Larian Studios, the developer of the game, is not directly involved in the television adaptation, Chris Perkins, former head of creative for D&D, will serve as a consultant to ensure the series remains faithful to its tabletop roots. Mazin, who has stated he has invested nearly 1,000 hours into Baldur's Gate 3, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the game's world and characters to life with respect and care.
Francesca Orsi, HBO head of drama programming, highlighted Mazin's passion for the source material and his talent for crafting immersive worlds as promising for the series. Gabriel Marano of Hasbro echoed this sentiment, noting the anticipation for a Baldur's Gate adaptation and expressing confidence in the partnership with HBO and Mazin.
Mazin's previous television work includes the Emmy-winning miniseries Chernobyl and the adaptation of The Last of Us. The Baldur's Gate series will have creative freedom due to the absence of an officially announced Baldur's Gate 4, but will need to align with one of the game's various endings, thus canonizing a specific conclusion to the game's narrative.
