In 1999, a vibrant and romantic take on the classic mummy lore redefined the action-adventure genre for a generation. Starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, The Mummy not only spawned a successful franchise but also served as a gateway for many into the world of action-adventure cinema. Now, with a new sequel announced, fans have a perfect opportunity to revisit this influential film, as the 1999 original is currently streaming for free on YouTube.

Production for The Mummy: The Book of the Dead, directed by the filmmaking duo Radio Silence known for Ready or Not and the Scream reboot, began last month, with a late 2027 release planned. The film is set to reunite the original cast, including Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah.

The story of the 1999 film unfolds in Egypt during the mid-1920s. Rick O’Connell, portrayed by Fraser, is an American legionary facing execution. His fortunes change when Evelyn Carnahan, a brilliant librarian and Egyptologist played by Weisz, intervenes. Aided by her brother Jonathan, Evelyn possesses a map to Hamunaptra, the legendary City of the Dead. Believing O’Connell is their best guide, they embark on a perilous journey.

During their expedition, Evelyn discovers the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome capable of resurrecting the deceased. Her inadvertent reading of a passage awakens Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian high priest intent on reuniting with his lost love. This event propels the narrative into a series of thrilling encounters and supernatural challenges.

While the plot of The Mummy is straightforward, its strength lies in its brisk pacing, witty dialogue, and engaging action sequences. Fraser delivers a charismatic performance as Rick O’Connell, a hero who is both capable and endearingly flawed. He is perfectly complemented by Weisz's Evelyn, whose sharp intellect and historical knowledge are crucial to the unfolding events. The dynamic between Rick's action-oriented approach and Evelyn's scholarly insights forms the core of the film's appeal, culminating in a compelling romantic subplot.

Upon its release, The Mummy received mixed critical reviews, with some publications citing issues with the script and story. However, the film's entertainment value was widely acknowledged. Noted film critic Roger Ebert awarded the film three out of four stars, stating, "There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it." The film’s box office success led to two sequels.

No gods, no kings, only Brendan Fraser in The Mummy.

Recent attempts to revive the IP have included a 2017 film starring Tom Cruise, intended to launch a shared cinematic universe, which ultimately failed to gain traction. Fraser himself commented on the difference in tone, telling Variety in 2022, "The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun." A subsequent horror-focused remake by Lee Cronin also did not capture the spirit of the original.

The enduring appeal of the 1999 The Mummy lies in its unique blend of adventure, humor, and romance—elements that are difficult to replicate. While the success of the upcoming 2027 sequel remains to be seen, its reunion of Fraser and Weisz offers a promising connection to the original's beloved charm.
