Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3 Remains an Impossibly Good Halloween Binge

Most great TV shows take time to find their footing. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was no exception, with its first season being a mixed bag as the cast and writers navigated the series' nascent stages. However, the show's second season marked a significant improvement, largely due to the introduction of iconic villains Spike and Drusilla, alongside Angel's darker transformation into Angelus. Yet, the writers managed to surpass this achievement by making the third season even better.

As October draws to a close, there is still time for one last spooky television marathon. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" season 3 offers a compelling reason to revisit Sunnydale, with Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang facing their most terrifying adversary yet: a seemingly ordinary politician.

Mayor Wilkins and Faith: A Villainous Duo

Season 3 introduced two formidable antagonists: Faith Lehane and Mayor Richard Wilkins. While Faith eventually found redemption, Mayor Wilkins remained a unique threat throughout the season. Their dynamic, though seemingly disparate, highlights the brilliance of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its creator, Joss Whedon.

Faith arrives early in season 3, revealed as the new Slayer following the previous one's demise. In contrast to Buffy's measured approach, Faith is impulsive and unpredictable, deriving a dark thrill from slaying demons beyond the necessity of saving lives. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is currently available to stream on Hulu.

Meanwhile, Mayor Wilkins, a presence since season 2, harbors a dark secret. For over a century, he has maintained his youth and position through a pact with an ancient demon, meticulously orchestrating events in preparation for a ritual to transform into a monstrous serpent and annihilate Sunnydale.

Harry Groener's portrayal of Wilkins is disturbingly effective, maintaining an unnerving facade of polite civility even when issuing deadly threats. This subtle performance elevates the character beyond a typical evil politician trope.

Initially, Faith and the Mayor appear unconnected, but their arcs converge when Faith succumbs to darker impulses and begins working for Wilkins. Her first task is to eliminate Buffy, a plan that involves seducing Buffy's boyfriend, Angel, in an attempt to revert him to his vampiric, evil state. Though Buffy ultimately triumphs, the ensuing conflict is exceptionally intense, proving brutal even decades later.

This storyline was so impactful that Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, reported being harassed by fans on the street who were deeply invested in the characters' conflict. "When I started being really naughty, some people were upset by my antics, and some fans started freaking me out," Dushku shared in a 2018 interview. "People would call me by my character name like, ‘Yo Faith! Who do you think you are coming to Sunnydale and stealing Buffy’s boyfriend!’ They’d want to fight me on Santa Monica Boulevard, and I was just trying to get groceries." The power of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" season 3 lies in its ability to create such deeply resonant and affecting narratives.
