HBO Max is bringing back Calcifer's Yule Log for the holiday season. The ambient video, a popular offering for Studio Ghibli fans, will return to the streaming service on November 1, according to a Warner Bros. press release.
This marks the return of the video for the holiday season, after its initial debut on HBO Max during the 2021 holidays. It was later removed and had largely been unavailable online. The Yule Log has been a recurring part of HBO Max's holiday programming, which has also featured ambient videos from properties such as Harry Potter, Rick and Morty, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Warner Bros. has not yet confirmed if the Calcifer video will remain on the service permanently or if it will be removed again after the holiday period.
The Yule Log video is inspired by the film Howl's Moving Castle, a 2004 Studio Ghibli adaptation directed by Hayao Miyazaki based on Diana Wynne Jones's novel. The movie has become one of the studio's most beloved titles, spawning merchandise and even dedicated areas in the Ghibli Park. The character Calcifer, voiced by Tatsuya Gashuin in Japanese and Billy Crystal in the English dub, powers the titular moving castle and is known for his sassy yet warm demeanor.
The 30-minute ambient video features Calcifer tending to a fireplace with accompanying music and sounds from the film, offering a peaceful viewing experience for fans.
While HBO Max has been the primary U.S. streaming platform for Studio Ghibli films, including Howl's Moving Castle, the service is under scrutiny as Paramount nears its acquisition of Warner Bros. Reports suggest a potential merger between Paramount+ and HBO Max. In related news, Shout! Factory has been reprinting its Studio Ghibli steelbook collection, with Howl's Moving Castle now available on Amazon for $27.99.
