Carrie Showrunner: Stephen King Pitched Key Changes for New Series

The recent Prime Video adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie has sparked considerable discussion among fans regarding its departures from the original 1974 novella. Showrunner Mike Flanagan has now clarified that many of these significant alterations, including the expansion of the story's universe and the introduction of new elements, were directly conceived by King himself.

Flanagan emphasized that he approached King before any production began. "There's no world where I'm doing anything like that without talking to Steve about it first," Flanagan told Polygon. King was involved in reviewing the proposed changes and was enthusiastic about the prospect of developing the world beyond the scope of his initial novel. "He got to see all of that before I agreed to do the show, and was very intimately involved in deciding how we wanted to expand that universe."

Instead of merely adapting the existing narrative, King was reportedly excited by the opportunity to explore a broader scope. "Steve believed very much that the story had already been told as he had written it," Flanagan explained. "What excited him and animated him about this was the chance to expand that universe and to open it up into a much broader world."

Expanding the Supernatural Lore

One of the most notable changes in the 2026 series is the establishment that Carrie White, portrayed by Summer Howell, is not an isolated case but one of many individuals possessing psychic abilities. The series further integrates this by referring to this shared power as "the Shine," a term familiar to readers of King's later works. Flanagan suggested that this connection would have been natural for King had the book been written later in his career. "Even in the book as it is, he points to the larger universe and says, 'Carrie's not alone. She just doesn't live long enough to realize that,'" Flanagan stated, indicating King's own fascination with this concept.

Furthermore, the series diverges significantly by depicting Carrie's survival of the tragic events. Flanagan confirmed that King was in agreement with this fundamental alteration, stating, "We all, including Steve, agreed that this version of Carrie deserved to survive the story, and we were always servicing that." This decision was made to facilitate further narrative exploration.

Another significant addition is the character Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek. Initially presented as Carrie's solitary friend and mentor in developing her powers, Emaline is later revealed to be a more complex figure who manipulates events through astral projection before appearing in person. Flanagan highlighted King's deep involvement in Emaline's creation. "Emaline... was the character King had the most input into and the one he was the most excited to shape," he said. Flanagan acknowledged that these changes, particularly Emaline's role and Carrie's survival, were intentionally designed to be controversial.

For viewers who prefer a rendition closer to the original material, Flanagan suggested revisiting existing adaptations. "If people truly aren't interested in exploring those directions, they've got three other versions that they can fall back on that will give them what they're comfortable with," he remarked. He reiterated that the goal was never to replicate the original but to expand upon it, a direction King actively supported. "His whole excitement here was that this is a great opportunity to expand the world."
