A surprise Doctor Who Christmas special is set to air, featuring Christopher Eccleston reprising his role as the Ninth Doctor. This comes after initial reports suggested there would be no holiday episode for the series this year.
The Ninth Doctor Adventures: The Wash
The special, titled "The Ninth Doctor Adventures: The Wash," is a full-cast audio drama from Big Finish. It marks a reunion between Eccleston and Carole Ann Ford, who reprises her role as Susan Foreman, the Doctor's granddaughter, first introduced in the show's inaugural episode, "An Unearthly Child."
Written by Robert Valentine, the story sees the Ninth Doctor, still grappling with loneliness, drawn into a mystery at a laundromat where the memory of his granddaughter troubles him. The narrative explores a force lurking within a washing machine and poses the question of whether the Doctor can confront it.
Eccleston expressed his enthusiasm for the script, stating, "This was a brilliant, really outstanding script, I thought. I love that notion that as we go through our lives, particularly if you’re a Time Lord, everybody you meet remains with you." He also spoke highly of working with Ford, calling it "a real honor" and referencing "An Unearthly Child" as an inspirational episode from his own viewing of the series.
Ford commented on the story's strength, noting, "Susan pushes this Doctor to try and sort himself out and not be so touchy with people. I think listeners will be cheering Susan on!"
How to Watch
"The Ninth Doctor Adventures: The Wash" will be available to stream on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel starting December 22nd. Following its initial release, the audio drama will remain accessible on the channel for a month, offering fans a chance to enjoy the Christmas-themed adventure throughout the holiday season.
