Actor and writer Colman Domingo is reportedly in discussions to co-write a live-action film centered on Tiana, the protagonist of Disney's 2009 animated feature The Princess and the Frog. Playwright and director Robert O’Hara is also in talks to collaborate on the script.
The proposed movie would be the newest in Disney's ongoing series of live-action adaptations. This trend has seen mixed financial results for the studio, with recent releases failing to meet box office expectations. For instance, the live-action Moana, originally slated for 2026, grossed approximately $95 million globally during its opening weekend in July. Similarly, the 2025 remake of Snow White brought in $87.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend last March.
Despite these figures and mixed critical reception for some of its recent live-action projects, Disney appears committed to continuing this strategy. Upcoming adaptations include a new Tangled film, with Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim set to portray Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively. Diego Luna has been cast in an undisclosed role for the Tangled project, while Scarlett Johansson is reportedly no longer in talks for the part of Mother Gothel.
Other live-action projects in development at Disney include reimagined versions of Bambi and Hercules. The latter is being produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, with plans to offer a "modern spin" and tell a "different story," a narrative approach that seems to align with the reported direction for the Tiana-focused film.
