CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the upcoming live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie will not be a direct adaptation of the game's storyline. Instead, the film will introduce a new narrative set within the established Cyberpunk universe.
"We definitely don't want to make a film adaptation of the game," stated CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski in an interview with PAP Biznes. "We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story."
The movie is being produced in partnership with Paramount, under the Skydance banner. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the live-action Transformers franchise, is attached to produce the film.
The Cyberpunk universe, originally created by tabletop RPG designer Mike Pondsmith, offers a rich setting for exploring themes of identity, autonomy, and cybernetic modification. CD Projekt Red has previously utilized this expansive world for other multimedia projects, such as the acclaimed anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This approach, which features original characters and stories within the game's existing world, appears to be the favored direction for the upcoming film.
CD Projekt Red is also actively developing new original content, including Project Hadar, their first game set in a completely new universe. This follows their strategy of building upon established intellectual properties like The Witcher, based on novels, and Cyberpunk, based on a tabletop RPG.
