Paramount Pictures is collaborating with CD Projekt Red on a live-action film adaptation of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, attached as producer. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the project in a statement, expressing excitement about the partnership. The announcement means the sprawling world of Cyberpunk 2077 will expand beyond video games and its existing anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
While details on the film's plot and cast remain scarce, the news inevitably draws comparisons to another celebrated cyberpunk film starring Keanu Reeves: Johnny Mnemonic. Released in 1995, the film is set in a near-future dystopia where information is transported via data couriers who store it in their own brains. Reeves plays Johnny, a courier tasked with a dangerous job that quickly spirals out of control, pitting him against yakuza, corrupt handlers, and cybernetically enhanced thugs.
Despite a mixed reception upon its release, Johnny Mnemonic has since gained a cult following for its prescient themes and unique visual style, as well as its star-studded cast including Dolph Lundgren, Ice-T, and Udo Kier. The film's depiction of a technologically saturated, corporate-dominated future, complete with internet-fueled crime and rampant data corruption, feels particularly relevant today. Its unique blend of action, cybernetics, and social commentary, however outlandish at times, has cemented its status as a foundational cyberpunk film.
There is currently no release date for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie. In the meantime, Johnny Mnemonic is widely available on streaming services and for purchase, offering a perfect primer for those looking to dive into the cyberpunk genre or revisit a classic.
