Netflix has unveiled the first official image of Daniel Craig in its upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, revealing the actor as the scheming magician Andrew Ketterley. The image, which debuted in Empire magazine, shows Craig in period attire within a room filled with optical equipment.
While the visual might evoke a whimsical persona, Craig described his character as someone whose "intentions are good, but I'm not so sure they are," adding that Ketterley "gets overexcited about what could be, and therefore overlooks the people around him and the consequences of what he's doing." Director Greta Gerwig offered a more concise assessment, calling him "the stupidest magician in the world who actually made magic."
Adaptation Approach
In a departure from previous film adaptations, Netflix's Chronicles of Narnia will adapt the series chronologically. This means the first film will be The Magician's Nephew, the second-to-last book written by C.S. Lewis. This contrasts with Walden Media's earlier adaptations, which followed the publication order of the books.
Daniel Craig's character is pivotal in initiating the events that shape the broader Narnia narrative. He will be joined by a cast including Meryl Streep as Aslan, David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, and Ciarán Hinds. Greta Gerwig, known for her work on Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie, is directing, writing, and co-producing the film. Gerwig described her creative vision as aiming for something "big and transporting," akin to a "rock opera."
Netflix has scheduled the film for a wide theatrical release on February 12, 2027, with its streaming debut on Netflix following on April 2, 2027.
