Disney+ has officially announced a new Darkwing Duck animated series, set to feature a voice cast led by Mark Hamill as the titular crime-fighter and Seth Rogen in a producing role. A teaser trailer for the upcoming show has also been released.
The plot synopsis reveals that Darkwing Duck has been trapped in an alternate reality for 35 years, unaware of his past heroic exploits. His return to action is prompted by the arrival of a rebellious teenager named Duckie, who is familiar with his heroic past. Together, this unlikely pair will confront familiar foes like Negaduck and Megavolt, and reunite with allies Launchpad McQuack, Gosalyn, and Morgana to protect the universe.
In addition to Hamill as Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck, and Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, the voice cast includes Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, Lilimar as Duckie, Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are executive producers for the series. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham are producing on behalf of Point Grey Pictures. Tad Stones, the original creator of Darkwing Duck, served as a consultant during the new series' development.
Stones expressed his excitement for Darkwing's return, noting that the new creative team has enhanced the action and comedy while retaining the show's emotional core. He stated that the series reimagines Darkwing Duck in the vein of legendary heroes like Robin Hood and Zorro, whose characters have been reinterpreted across different eras and mediums. Stones believes that Darkwing Duck will continue to appear in new contexts, always ready to take the spotlight.
The original Darkwing Duck series, which debuted in the 1990s, aired on the Disney Channel before moving to ABC and entering syndication. The character was originally voiced by Jim Cummings and has since appeared in various video games and comic books.
