Disney is reviving the iconic Disney Afternoon character Darkwing Duck with a new series set to premiere on Disney Plus. The upcoming show will feature the return of Drake Mallard as the crime-fighting superhero, alongside familiar allies Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana, and classic villains such as Negaduck and Megavolt.
The synopsis for the new series reveals a unique premise: Darkwing Duck has been trapped for 35 years in an alternate reality where his heroic exploits are unknown. The situation changes when a rebellious teenager named Duckie, aware of his heroic past, arrives to pull the ego-driven vigilante back into action. Together, this unlikely pair will face their old enemies and defend the entire universe.
The voice cast includes Mark Hamill as Drake Mallard/Darkwing Duck, Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar as Duckie. The ensemble also features Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich, and Nat Faxon. Original creator Tad Stones served as a consultant on the new series, expressing his excitement for Darkwing to "get dangerous again."
This revival follows Disney's trend of revisiting its animated library. Darkwing Duck previously reappeared in the 2017 reboot of DuckTales. The original Darkwing Duck series, which ran for 91 episodes from 1991, also spawned video games and comic books. Jim Cummings was the original voice for Darkwing Duck, with Chris Diamantopoulos taking over the role in the DuckTales reboot. The original series is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
A release date for the new series has not yet been announced.
