The first trailer for the Hideo Kojima-produced anime spin-off, "Death Stranding: Isolations," has been released, offering a brief and unsettling glimpse into a world shattered by catastrophic events. The official synopsis, succinctly stating "My mom became a crater," hints at the deeply personal narrative within the post-apocalyptic setting.
"Death Stranding: Isolations" is set in the same universe as the acclaimed video game, where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. The emergence of supernatural entities known as Beached Things (BTs), which manifest from human necrosis, triggers massive "voidout" explosions capable of obliterating cities. Compounding these disasters is Timefall, a phenomenon caused by BTs that rapidly ages anything it touches. Survivors have congregated in isolated Knot Cities across the former United States, now known as the United Cities of America.
The anime series will explore an original story centered on a young girl living within a voidout crater, a fate seemingly tied to her mother as suggested by the trailer. The synopsis elaborates, "In the wake of this cataclysm, many were forced to live in absolute isolation—among them, a young girl. Although this lonely existence was forced upon her, she soon grows to prefer solitude, eschewing all opportunities for real human connection and allowing herself to be strung along by fate."
The project boasts a notable creative team. Directed by Takayuki Sano, known for his work on "Jujutsu Kaisen," the series features writing by Tow Ubukata of "Psycho-Pass" fame. Character designs are handled by Ilya Kuvshinov ("Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045") and Sayaka Koiso ("Dorohedoro"). Hideo Kojima himself serves as an executive producer.
Animation duties fall to E&H Production, the studio behind recent titles such as "Undead Unluck" and the upcoming "Magic Knight Rayearth" in 2026. "Death Stranding: Isolations" is slated to stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.
This anime is part of a growing slate of "Death Stranding" multimedia projects. Last year saw the announcement of "Death Stranding: Mosquito," directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto with ABC Animation Studio. Furthermore, a live-action "Death Stranding" movie is also in development, with Michael Sarnoski of "A Quiet Place: Day One" attached to direct an original story intended to "capture the soul" of the games.
"Death Stranding" joins a trend of video game adaptations, with other prominent titles like "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice," "Bloodborne," and "Ghost of Tsushima" also undergoing anime development in various stages.
