The first teaser trailer for the anime adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding has been released, offering a cryptic glimpse into the game's apocalyptic world through the eyes of a new protagonist.
The trailer, titled Death Stranding Isolations, opens with a desolate scene featuring a crater with a trailer home at its center. Inside, a young girl dreams of spectral creatures known as BTs emerging from the ground before a shadowed figure approaches. This girl is an original character created for the anime, following an approach similar to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners by telling a new story within the established universe.
The series' tagline, "My mom became a crater," has quickly become a point of discussion among fans. In the context of the Death Stranding universe, this phrase likely refers to "voidouts"—massive explosions triggered under specific circumstances that can leave behind significant craters. It is plausible that the main character's mother's actions or demise created the conditions for such an event.
The production boasts a notable lineup of talent. Hideo Kojima serves as executive producer, with direction by Takayuki Sano, known for his work as animation director on Attack on Titan: The Final Season. This marks Sano's directorial debut. Character designs are handled by Ilya Kuvshinov, an illustrator and designer previously involved with Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The animation is being produced by E&H Productions, and the script is written by Tow Ubukata, who has contributed to sci-fi series such as Psycho-Pass 2 and Ghost in the Shell Arise.
This new anime series is slated for a global release next year on Disney+, with Hulu distributing it in the US. Further details are expected to be announced at a later date. Fans may receive additional information during the Kojima Productions exhibition commencing in Tokyo tomorrow.
