Filmmaker Zach Cregger, fresh off the success of his take on 'Resident Evil,' is set to direct a new science fiction film titled 'The Flood.' Despite the name's association with Halo's lore, Cregger's project will not feature any elements from the popular video game franchise. Instead, the film is described as a deep-space thriller with an alien element, drawing comparisons to 'Alien.'
Jennifer Lawrence has been cast in 'The Flood,' though her specific role remains undisclosed. It is anticipated she will portray the film's lead, a deep-space ship captain. This casting places Lawrence in familiar territory, having previously starred in the 2016 sci-fi film 'Passengers.'
The narrative of 'The Flood' centers on a ship captain and her crew who investigate a mysterious signal emanating from a distant world. Their investigation leads them to an alien artifact that disrupts time, reality, and their sanity, culminating in a confrontation with an "incomprehensible intelligence." Cregger's involvement marks a reunion with Warner Bros./New Line, the studio behind his previous film, 'Weapons.' He expressed enthusiasm for working with Lawrence, calling her a "one-of-a-kind" talent. Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and Roy Lee's Vertigo are also attached to produce.
While 'Resident Evil' has garnered critical praise and commercial success, prompting expectations for a sequel, Cregger has indicated a reluctance to pursue further franchise work, even with existing ideas for a follow-up. He stated that 'Resident Evil' was his sole venture into franchise filmmaking.
