Doctor Who has a history of depicting its titular Time Lord at his worst, but the 2014 episode "The Caretaker" remains an underappreciated example of the Doctor at his most unhinged and hypocritical. The installment focused on Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor as he went undercover as a janitor at Clara Oswald's school, Coal Hill, while an alien robot, the Skovox Blitzer, threatened Earth.
A Collision of Worlds
The episode's primary focus was not the Skovox Blitzer, but rather the tense character drama emerging from the first meeting between the Twelfth Doctor and Clara's boyfriend, Danny Pink. Throughout the season, Clara had been navigating two distinct lives: her everyday existence as an English teacher involved with Danny, and her extraordinary adventures with the Doctor. "The Caretaker" brought these worlds crashing together, creating an uncomfortable dynamic for all involved.
The Twelfth Doctor, introduced as a no-nonsense and critical figure—a stark contrast to his more sentimental predecessor—showed his less admirable qualities in this episode. His interactions with Danny, a former soldier, were particularly revealing. The Doctor initially dismissed Danny's intelligence, referring to him dismissively as "a PE teacher" and implying he wasn't clever enough to be a math teacher. Despite the Doctor's pronouncements against violence, his own existence has been profoundly shaped by it, a fact highlighted by the existence of the "War Doctor." As Davros, the creator of the Daleks, once told the Time Lord, "The man who abhors violence, never carrying a gun, but this is the truth, Doctor: You take ordinary people and fashion them into weapons... behold your Children of Time, transformed into murderers."
Clara's relationship with Danny, a former soldier whom she still loved, served to illuminate the parallels between the Doctor and Danny. Caught between the two most important men in her life, Clara found herself inadvertently highlighting their similarities. Danny directly questioned Clara about her feelings for the Doctor, probing the ambiguous nature of her love, a question she struggled to answer.
The Doctor's treatment of Danny was difficult to watch, especially considering his past alliances with soldiers and organizations like UNIT. However, it served as a potent reminder that even with his heroic deeds, the Doctor possesses a dark, and at times monstrous, side.
While the Doctor and Danny did not fully reconcile by the end of "The Caretaker," they reached a mutual understanding. Their shared love for Clara and the acknowledgment of past regrets forged a grudging respect between them. The episode masterfully demonstrated that despite his accomplishments, the Doctor is also prone to jealousy, pettiness, and a reluctance to confront these aspects of himself. This complexity, however, is precisely what makes the Time Lord such a compelling and enduring protagonist—a hero who, like all beings, is imperfect.
