The newest film in the Evil Dead series, Evil Dead Burn, has become a significant streaming success on HBO Max shortly after its early October release. Data from FlixPatrol indicates the horror sequel reached the number one position on the platform's U.S. movie rankings within days of its debut.
Directed by Sébastien Vaniček, Evil Dead Burn follows Alice, portrayed by Souheila Yacoub, who is grieving the loss of her husband. Her retreat to a family home with her in-laws takes a terrifying turn when demonic forces transform the family into Deadites, forcing Alice into a fight for survival. The film also features Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, and Luciane Buchanan. This entry continues the franchise's tradition of standalone narratives within its gruesome horror universe, following 2023's Evil Dead Rise.
Critics have given Evil Dead Burn a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a generally positive reception to its violent content. Polygon's own review noted that while the film excels in inventive kills, cinematography, and sound design, it struggles to effectively blend the franchise's signature grotesque horror with its comedic elements, and the narrative's exploration of grief and family trauma falls short.
Despite mixed critical opinions, the film appears to resonate with horror enthusiasts seeking a visceral viewing experience filled with practical effects and demonic mayhem, making it a notable pick for the spooky season.
