Warner Bros. has officially announced that "Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest," the first feature film set in the HBO franchise, will be released on June 9, 2029. Owen Harris has been tapped to direct the film, with Beau Willimon attached to write the screenplay.
The movie will draw its material from George R.R. Martin's Targaryen history book, "Fire & Blood." This book chronicles the history of the dragon-riding Targaryen dynasty, including the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which was also depicted in the HBO series "House of the Dragon."
Harris has previous ties to the Game of Thrones universe, having directed episodes for "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." His directorial work also includes acclaimed episodes of "Black Mirror," such as "Be Right Back," "San Junipero," and "Striking Vipers."
"Fire & Blood" details the Targaryens' arrival in Westeros following the Doom of Valyria and their settlement on Dragonstone. The narrative focuses on Aegon I Targaryen's mission to unite the Seven Kingdoms under his rule, aided by his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys. Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys all rode formidable dragons: Balerion the Black Dread, Vhagar, and Meraxes, respectively. Vhagar would later be ridden by Aemond Targaryen in "House of the Dragon."
The Conquest saw Aegon battle various kingdoms, with significant opposition coming from King Harren the Black of Harrenhal and Princess Meria Martell of Dorne. Dorne's resistance was notably recalled in "House of the Dragon" Season 3, Episode 5.
Furthermore, the Game of Thrones lore suggests that Aegon I Targaryen was aware of the White Walkers and passed this knowledge down through subsequent rulers. His foresight of a looming threat in the North apparently motivated his desire for a Targaryen on the Iron Throne to ensure humanity's survival.
