A new teaser trailer has been released for the forthcoming Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation, which is scheduled to arrive in 2027. The preview offers a glimpse of character concept art, showcasing three masked warriors clad in elaborate, skull-themed battle armor. These illustrations depict distinct character archetypes.
While details about the anime remain sparse, the trailer's description indicates it will follow "one of the last remaining samurai as he defends his homeland of Tsushima against the Mongol Empire." This synopsis might suggest a direct adaptation of the main game's plot, which centers on Jin Sakai's fight against invaders. However, the anime is actually based on "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends," the game's multiplayer mode that was later made available as a standalone title. This mode features players selecting from four classes—samurai, hunter, ronin, and assassin—to battle supernatural foes inspired by Japanese folklore. The characters featured in the teaser trailer appear to represent three of these classes: hunter, ronin, and assassin, with the show's protagonist likely embodying the samurai role.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, stated that "Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project." He added that Aniplex is an ideal partner for translating Sucker Punch Productions' game into an anime series.
The animation is being produced by Kamikaze Douga, known for their work on Star Wars: Visions shorts. Takanobu Mizuno, director of "The Duel," will lead the series. Gen Urobuchi, acclaimed for his writing on anime such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass, is handling series composition and co-writing the script with Satoshi Maejima. Takashi Okazaki, creator of Afro Samurai, is responsible for the character designs.
The anime was initially revealed in January 2025 and will be exclusively available on Crunchyroll. The original Ghost of Tsushima was released for PlayStation 4 in July 2020, followed by Ghost of Tsushima Legends in October 2020. The game's sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, launched in 2025.
