The upcoming film Godzilla Minus Zero is set to make history as the first R-rated movie in the iconic kaiju franchise's 72-year run. The Motion Picture Association has officially assigned the rating, citing "some violent content/bloody images" as the reason.
This marks a significant departure for the long-running series, which has featured numerous entries with violent spectacles of giant monsters battling and causing destruction. While films like Shin Godzilla explored body horror and atomic terror, and Godzilla Minus One depicted the devastating aftermath of World War II, none have previously garnered an R rating.
Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed Godzilla Minus One and is set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film. It will follow surviving characters as Godzilla seemingly returns despite earlier destruction. The film is also expected to reintroduce another iconic monster from the series' past.
Director and writer Takashi Yamazaki is returning for the sequel, bringing back key crew members including cinematographer Kōzō Shibasaki, editor Ryūji Miyajima, and composer Naoki Satō. Toho, the original rights holder, is producing the film, which will be their 34th Godzilla production. The movie is slated to premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026. It will subsequently be released in Japan on November 3, 2026, and in the United States through GKIDS on November 6, 2026.
