Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is Coming to Criterion Collection This Fall

Physical media enthusiasts will soon have a new addition to their collections as the Criterion Collection announces a deluxe edition release for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. The film is slated for a physical release this fall, making it available for Halloween viewing.

The Criterion edition will feature the film itself, alongside an extended director's cut titled "Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut," which adds eight minutes of footage. It will also include a making-of documentary, "The Anatomy Lesson: Director’s Cut," and a collection of interviews with the cast and crew. The set will be available as a four-disc 4K Blu-ray for $59.95, a two-disc Blu-ray for $49.95, and a three-disc DVD for $29.95. All editions are currently available for preorder on Criterion's website with a 20% discount.

The release date for the Criterion editions of del Toro's Frankenstein is set for October 27. This release follows Netflix's trend of offering physical editions for some of its acclaimed content, particularly for director-driven projects. Previous Criterion releases for Netflix include del Toro's "Pinocchio," Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma," Bong Joon-ho's "Okja," and Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog."

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is a faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel. The film, which premiered on Netflix on November 7, 2025, after a limited theatrical run, stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his creation. It has been met with positive reception from viewers and critics, holding an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A review noted Elordi's performance as a highlight, stating he is "by far the best thing about the movie."

Frankenstein movie still: Victor stands with his back to the camera, while his creation lies on the table, yet to be brought to life

In addition to Frankenstein, Criterion is also releasing other horror films in October, including "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Shout."
