The first trailer for Johnny Depp's upcoming film "Day Drinker" has been released, and it appears to feature several knowing references to the actor's bid for a career revival. The movie, slated for a 2027 release, follows "Ebeneezer," a retelling of "A Christmas Carol" featuring Depp, which is set to premiere this November. These projects mark Depp's return to mainstream Hollywood movies after a period of absence, following his high-profile legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard.
"Day Drinker" stars Depp as a mysterious alcoholic who becomes involved in exposing a criminal operation. The trailer includes dialogue from Depp's character that seems to allude to his personal circumstances. "I've made a living out of misbehaviour," Depp's character states as he is cuffed, adding with a slight smile, "I see no tangible reason to stop now. Don't you sometimes want to misbehave?"
Further lines from the trailer suggest a theme of vindication. "My story? Perhaps it's a tale of revenge," Depp's character muses, continuing, "Or perhaps something worse. What if all this is a ghost story? Or maybe I'm just another day drinker." The trailer concludes with Depp stating, "You thought I was f***ing done? I'm done when I say I'm done."
"Day Drinker" also features Madelyn Cline and Penelope Cruz. Marc Webb, director of "The Amazing Spider-Man," is helming the film, with "Fast X" co-writer Zach Dean credited for the screenplay. The film is scheduled for release on March 26, 2027.
This career resurgence comes amidst ongoing discussions about Depp's potential return to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently indicated that conversations have been held with Depp regarding his reprisal of the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in a potential "Pirates of the Caribbean 6." Bruckheimer has previously expressed interest in Depp returning to the role, even when it seemed less likely due to Disney's previous efforts to distance itself from the actor following his legal issues. Meanwhile, plans for a female-led "Pirates" film starring Margot Robbie are also reportedly in development.
