Director Kane Parsons has expressed interest in a potential sequel to his popular horror film, The Backrooms, suggesting a focus on expanding the existing lore rather than a straightforward continuation of the first film's narrative. Parsons indicated that if a sequel were to materialize, he would aim to explore aspects of the Backrooms' cultural significance that he felt were not fully realized in the initial movie.
"I consider it, me advancing and doubling down on the strengths that I think are more universally recognised about the core idea," Parsons stated in a recent interview. He elaborated that a sequel would address specific elements that "didn't feel like it accurately spoke to the cultural core of Backrooms in the first film," suggesting he would "go out of [his] way to poke at a little bit."
Instead of a traditional linear story, Parsons envisions a sequel as an "expanding image rather than a line." This approach would allow for adding more depth and flavor to the established universe, akin to creating "a different branch on the tree," rather than strictly adhering to the plot and characters of the original film. This method, he suggested, would give viewers more agency in their experience with the Backrooms universe.
Parsons also hinted at the possibility of introducing new characters or bringing back familiar faces from his YouTube series, suggesting that some figures might be "lying in wait" for future appearances. However, these developments could manifest as a YouTube-exclusive project rather than a full theatrical release, as Parsons is reportedly working on such a project concurrently.
Despite these intriguing possibilities, Parsons remains coy about confirming a sequel, preferring to maintain an element of surprise. "Because I like being subversive, and the excitement comes from not sharing—so I can't say," he commented, leaving the future of The Backrooms film franchise open to speculation.
