Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his iconic role as John Wick in a new animated film that will delve into the assassin's backstory before the events of the original movie. The project, produced by the same team behind the live-action John Wick franchise including Thunder Road, 87Eleven Entertainment, and Reeves himself, aims to adapt the 'Impossible Task' from John Wick's past.
Directed by Emmy Award-winner Shannon Tindle, known for "Ultraman: Rising" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," the film will be written by the sibling duo Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who also penned Marvel's "Eternals." According to Lionsgate, the movie will depict John Wick completing the 'Impossible Task' to free himself from the High Table and be reunited with his wife, Helen.
This animated prequel is one of several John Wick projects in development. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed excitement about the project's potential, stating that "in both animation and the world of ‘John Wick,’ the possibilities are endless." The animation studio has not yet been officially announced.
Additionally, John Wick 5 is officially confirmed, with director Chad Stahelski and co-writer Mike Finch actively working on the script. Stahelski recently mentioned that they have a promising story but are focused on ensuring its quality and satisfaction for fans.
Reeves is also involved in a John Wick video game from Saber Interactive, slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game promises to feature the series' signature "gun fu" combat system, immersive driving, and environments that mirror the film's aesthetic.
