The extensive global casting process for the live-action Naruto movie has commenced, with director Destin Daniel Cretton prioritizing the search for "Team 7." Cretton, known for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," shared the news, indicating that the initial focus will be on finding actors for the iconic characters Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and likely Kakashi.
This marks a significant step forward for the film adaptation, which has been in development since Lionsgate acquired the rights in 2015. Cretton took over directing duties after Michael Gracey departed the project in 2024. "Kishimoto-sensei’s stories have inspired generations of fans around the globe, and it’s an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time," Cretton stated in a social media post. "I’m thrilled to kick off this worldwide casting search for our Team 7 and to bring the incredible universe of Naruto to life."
Despite some fan apprehension regarding live-action anime adaptations, Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto has expressed his enthusiasm for the project. Kishimoto has given his blessing on multiple occasions and will be directly involved in the film's production, according to the manga's publishing imprint. "Right now, miracles are happening to me, one after another. My work, Naruto, is truly, truly becoming a Hollywood movie! And an even greater miracle is that the film will be directed by the one and only Destin Daniel Cretton," Kishimoto said in a statement on the official Naruto website. "I still cannot believe it! If so many miracles have already come together, then let us hope for even more. I am eagerly looking forward to the miraculous encounters that will bring us extraordinary and passionate actors! I cannot wait to meet my characters in the film!"
A notable challenge for the casting directors will be determining the appropriate age range for the actors. The narrative spans from the early days of Naruto to the significantly later events of Naruto: Shippuden, which includes a two-year time jump. This temporal gap could complicate casting if younger actors are chosen for initial roles, as their ages may naturally progress beyond the characters' development by the time later installments are produced.
