Waldron is a familiar name within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having created the Disney Plus series Loki, co-written Avengers: Doomsday, and penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Insiders cited by Deadline stress that the Nova project remains in its early stages of development, and Waldron might also take on directing duties should the film progress. This is not Marvel's first attempt at a Nova project, as a Disney Plus series based on the character was previously put on hold. The potential film could offer a much-needed return to the successful standalone space adventures that characterized the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Nova, traditionally Richard Rider, is a member of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force previously seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 3, featuring actors like Glenn Close and John C. Reilly. Rider is a prominent figure within the Corps, notably being one of the few surviving centurions after a devastating attack by Annihilus in the comic event Annihilation, which influenced the Guardians of the Galaxy comic runs that inspired the movies. A film focusing on Nova could function similarly to the Guardians movies, potentially with Nova leading a team of Nova Corps members. It's also speculated that Nova could join the current Guardians team, potentially turning the solo film into a de facto Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4.
