DC Studios has officially cast Mason Thames, known for his role in 'How to Train Your Dragon,' as Dick Grayson, the first character to don the Robin mantle, in the upcoming animated film 'Dynamic Duo.' The movie, slated for release on September 22, 2028, will explore the story of two Robins: Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, confirmed Thames's casting, noting the actor's enthusiasm for the role. "Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson," Safran stated in an interview with Collider. "He came in, and auditioned the shit out of it, and was awesome."
This casting news follows earlier reports from September about Thames potentially playing Grayson. The film is set to employ a unique blend of practical and digital effects, including miniatures, puppetry, and animatronics, to bring its characters to life. Logan Kim is reportedly cast as Jason Todd, with Marsai Martin as Barbara Gordon, Lee Pace as Red Hood 1, and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood 2.
'Dynamic Duo' will operate outside of the main DC Universe (DCU), falling under the studio's Elseworlds banner. DC Studios head James Gunn has previously clarified that the film will not be rewritten to connect to the ongoing DCU continuity, allowing it to exist in its own separate narrative space. This approach aligns with other projects like Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' films, which are also classified as Elseworlds stories.
Dick Grayson has a long history in live-action and animated adaptations, having been previously portrayed by actors such as Chris O'Donnell in 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman & Robin,' Brenton Thwaites in 'Titans,' and Burt Ward in the 1966 'Batman' television series.
