Matthew Rhys stars in new Golden Axe animated series on Paramount+

Matthew Rhys, recently acclaimed for his Emmy wins, has a new project premiering this week: an animated comedy series based on Sega's 1989 Golden Axe video game. Titled Golden Axe, the show is now available for streaming on Paramount+ with all 10 episodes released.

Rhys lends his voice to the dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead. The cast also features Danny Pudi and Liam McIntyre, with Lisa Gilroy providing the voice for sorceress Tyris. The series aims to adapt the premise of the original game, following warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to combat the persistent threat of the evil giant Death Adder. Their mission is complicated by the addition of Hampton Squib, a notably inexperienced adventurer.

Paramount+ describes the series as an homage to the iconic Sega title, where the protagonists must overcome their individual flaws to defeat Death Adder. The first two episodes of Golden Axe are also available to watch for free on YouTube for those who do not subscribe to Paramount+.
