Universal has released the first official images from Miami Vice '85, showcasing Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as James 'Sonny' Crockett. The reboot of the classic 1980s television series, helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, is slated for a May 19, 2028 release.
The newly shared photos, marking the start of production, capture Jordan and Butler in character, complete with firearms, offering a glimpse into the film's aesthetic. These images were distributed via social media to announce the commencement of filming.
According to Variety, the film's description indicates it will delve into "the glamour and corruption of mid-80's Miami." The narrative draws inspiration from the pilot episode and the first season of the original series, which significantly influenced cultural trends in fashion and filmmaking.
The production has also secured a notable cast. John Leguizamo, who starred in the original Miami Vice series, is reportedly set to portray the film's main antagonist. Walton Goggins has recently been added to the cast as a second villain.
Miami Vice '85 is produced by Kosinski and Dylan Clark, with Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer serving as writers. The film is scheduled to premiere in 2028, almost two years from its initial announcement.
