Netflix Reportedly In Talks to Acquire Film Social Media Platform Letterboxd

Netflix is reportedly in the early stages of negotiation to acquire Letterboxd, a popular social media platform dedicated to film discussion and logging. According to a report from Puck, the streaming giant is among several Hollywood suitors, including Sony Pictures and Paramount, that are considering purchasing the company. Private equity groups like TPG and RedBird, as well as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, have also expressed interest.

Letterboxd, founded in 2011, allows users to rate, review, and share their movie-watching experiences. The platform has grown to over 30 million users and has become a central hub for online cinematic discourse. In April, it was revealed that Tiny, which holds a 60% stake in Letterboxd acquired in a $50 million deal, is looking to sell its shares. The platform is currently valued at approximately $250 million.

Concerns have been raised by users regarding potential biases if a major film company were to acquire Letterboxd. The fear is that the platform's feed could be skewed to promote the acquiring company's own productions, drawing parallels to Amazon's management of IMDb. Private equity firms might also focus on increasing monetization through additional premium services or more advertisements.

This potential acquisition comes at a time when the social media landscape is increasingly dominated by polarizing figures and entities. Many are hopeful that Letterboxd can maintain its current environment, preserving its role as a space for diverse film recommendations and discussions, from popular blockbusters to more obscure art-house cinema.
