Netflix's BioShock Movie Script Nears Completion, Director Says

Director Francis Lawrence has shared an encouraging update on Netflix's film adaptation of the acclaimed video game series BioShock, stating that the script is nearing completion. Lawrence, who is currently promoting his upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, confirmed in an interview with GamesRadar+ that he is still actively working on the BioShock script and feels positive about its progress. "We're pretty close," Lawrence told the publication. "I'm feeling really good about it."

Netflix announced Lawrence's involvement in the project back in 2022. The development of a BioShock film has been a protracted process, with various attempts and directors attached over the years. The project faced delays in 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, as well as Lawrence's prior commitments. With his work on the latest Hunger Games installment nearing its release, Lawrence may now have more bandwidth to focus on bringing Rapture to the screen.

A Difficult Road to Adaptation

The journey to a live-action BioShock movie has been notably challenging. Gore Verbinski was initially slated to direct the adaptation shortly after the game's 2007 release, but the project stalled due to budget concerns and creative differences regarding its intended R-rating. More recently, director Guillermo del Toro revealed he had also been approached about helming the film, describing those conversations as some of the most difficult he has experienced.

The BioShock adaptation stands as one of the most enduring video game projects in development. Fans have long hoped for a successful translation of the game's unique atmosphere and narrative to the big screen. With the script reportedly nearing its final stages under Lawrence's direction, there is renewed optimism that Netflix might finally bring this ambitious adaptation to fruition.
